About Alicia’s Boat
Alicia’s Boat is a special boat constructed with simple materials but which has come to mean so much more than one might expect. Alicia Daugherty and her friend, Abby Householder, originally had the idea to build their very own boat. So they collected plastic bottles, build a boat-o-type and then two pontoons, and conducted a successful test of one of the pontoons.
Sadly, Alicia was never able to finish her boat. After Alicia’s tragic death in June 2011, family and friends got together to complete the boat and set sail, so to speak. In an afternoon the boat was done which led to a successful test on the Conewago Creek a week later.
On August 21, 2011, over 60 friends and family members gathered at Gifford Pinchot State Park to see the official boat launch. It was a wonderful day. But this was only the beginning.
In the weeks that followed, there was a newspaper article and eventually a televised news interview. And there are more plans for our boat. Alicia and Abby originally wanted to enter it into the Anything That Floats contest at the Carlisle Summer Fair, but the scheduling never worked out. We are planning on entering it in that as well as other events including the annual Boat Parade which is part of Yorkfest in York, PA. And there may be other events to come.
Updates as well as more of the story will be posted here on this site. Thank you for visiting.
