The Final Build
Alicia and Abby had already done all the hard work of collecting the bottles and building the pontoons. All that was left to do was connect the two pontoons with a sheet of plywood for the deck.
So Alicia’s friends and family got together on the afternoon of July 23, 2011 to finish the boat. After picking up a few supplies (more 2x4s, plywood, a flagpole, nuts, and bolts)we got to work on the final construction. Thanks to Alicia’s dad, Karl Daugherty, we had a great design that would allow us to have a removable deck so that it would be easier for us to transport.
The first step was to make the beams for across the boat that would support the deck. We cut them to length, lined everything up, drilled holes, and bolted it together. It was starting to look like a real boat!
Of course, no boat should be without a flagpole, but we had that covered as well (although the flag would be finished later)
In a single summer afternoon we were able to finish the boat. All that was left to was to test it. We were getting very excited!
